World Light. Determined that he will someday be a great poet, Olaf Karason pursues his dream in the face of the contempt and indifference of the people around him, taking up a life of poverty, loneliness, failed love affairs, and sexual scandal as he journeys across Iceland to seek his goal.

Laxness has deep compassion for the suffering and missed opportunities of the poor Icelanders of his time, and the contempt with which they are treated by the rich and powerful. Halldor Laxness is by far the most incredible author I've ever come across. After reading Independent People, one of his most famous novels, I decided to read World Light.
